Character Information
Character Name: Gimli, son of Glóin, also known as Lockbearer and Elf Friend.Character Series: The Lord of the Rings (Peter Jackson's trilogy).
Character Age: 140 years.
Character Gender: Male.
Original Canon
Canon Point: After Aragorn is crowned King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor.
Background Link: Gimli, Dwarves, The War of the Ring.
Personality: All members of the Fellowship are brave and loyal, having decided to join a nearly suicidal mission for the greater good of the Middle Earth.
He is extremely proud of his heritage, for example when he taunts Legolas about tasting true Dwarven hospitality, and later when they discover the ruins of Moira and its people, taking his axe with redoubled vigor in the following battle. He is a powerful warrior, well trained and well learned in the traditional weapon of his race, the axe. He thirsts for battle to prove himself and he not even once considers abandoning a battle once it has been engaged. That said, he is not blind, and as he pointed out before the battle in Helm's Deep, he can recognize when odds are utterly against them. His faith and loyalty to his friends, however, is unmovable and he is willing to journey into danger for their sake, without much second thought.
Gimli is also a source of humor in the Fellowship, and this is partly why he ends up striking such a friendship with Legolas. He is unwilling to let hardships drown him in sorrow or despair, and he always has a quip or a remark to go with the situation. Unlike Legolas' cheerful humor, however, Gimli's is much more of a sarcastic, sardonic taste. He is a very emotional creature, easy to irritate but also equally easy to amuse, and though he can be rash, he is never once truly malicious. He values honor and beauty, and he is capable of being humbled by both. His devotion to Lady Galadriel is proof of this, as even though Dwarves and Elves have been in rather sour terms for so long they've forgotten the reason why, he easily admits to her glory. Though he values tradition and history, Gimli always makes judgments for himself, such as his friendship with Aragorn and Legolas show. Once he gives his heart to someone, they will always have it and he will fight against impossible odds for them.
He's a loud, sometimes cranky creature, but he is extremely gentle at heart and easily moved by true virtue. His quick temper and his raucous disposition might be intimidating at first, but it's soon shown that he'd rather drink and have a good laugh, than pick a serious fight. That said, for all his rough humor, one must never forget that Gimli is both a skilled warrior and a stubborn dwarf. He does not forgive true offenses easily and he can and will kill whatever he perceives to be a danger to himself and especially to those he holds dear. He comes from a war-wrecked world and his experience in the War of the Ring only hardened him further in that respect: he is no stranger to death and not the tiniest bit afraid of delivering it, either. His morbid humor can attest to it.
Abilities: As all dwarves, Gimli is sturdy and has superhuman endurance, to pain, heat, cold and punishment in general. He is also by far the strongest member of the Fellowship, as far as brute strength is concerned, capable of killing with one or two hits of his axe, cutting through armor with relative ease. His skill with axes is second to none, enabling him to momentarily stop an incoming rush of enemies in a bottleneck. His sense of direction is also worth note, considering he managed to help the Fellowship navigate the ruins of Moria after the fall of Gandalf the Grey, despite the fact he'd never set foot in it before.
